The events of World War II and the Victory over Fascism in 1945 determined the development of the world in the second half of the XX century and, in large measure, had a decisive impact on the formation of the contemporary political map of the world. Cooperation amongst independent states, the broad public dialogue, world integration processes and the quest for a more just world order – all these main vectors of international interaction became possible thanks to the heroism and strong will of the peoples who did not falter before the onslaught of the inhuman ideology of Fascism and Nazism, and who at the price of their own lives, won the right for the following generations to live in a free and equitable world.
The objective of the Conference in Bratislava was to remind the international community and, especially the younger generation of the world, about the main lessons to be drawn from World War II. The Conference was supported by the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico, the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev and the King of Spain Juan Carlos I.
The Conference in Bratislava gathered more than 180 public, scientific, religious, political and cultural dignitaries, representatives of international and national non-governmental organizations as well as war veterans from 30 countries of Europe, the Americas and Asia.
During the period of the Conference the wreath-laying ceremonies have been held at the monuments of the fallen soldiers in Bratislava.
