The World Public Forum (WPF) "Dialogue of Civilizations" is a deliberative-consultative body that unites into a single network various international and national nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), representatives of public and state institutions, civil society organizations and faith-based groups, academics, representatives of cultural, spiritual, business, and media spheres from different countries, members of diverse civilizations and cultural traditions, and individuals who share the principles of openness mutual respect which form the basis of the contemporary dialogue of civilizations.
The main goals of the Forum are to unite the efforts of the global community to protect the spiritual and cultural values of humankind and to create a space for constructive dialogue among the major civilizations of the modern world. The work of the Forum is aimed at defining, developing and promoting dialogue, and introducing the spirit of cooperation and understanding into everyday life.
The World Public Forum seeks to create effective and democratic instruments to solve global problems and set in motion evolutionary changes in the structure of modern society. Among the Forum's tasks are protecting and promoting the co-existence of diverse ideas, and combining liberal standards with humanitarian values.
Implementation of the “Dialogue of Civilizations” program is closely connected with inter-confessional dialogue that brings together representatives of world religions to face the global challenges of extremism and terrorism.
Management
The World Public Forum «Dialogue of Civilizations» is an international, independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization.
Vladimir Yakunin (Russia) is the Founding President of the WPF "Dialogue of Civilizations". The Co-chairmen of the Forum are federal Chancellor of Austria (2007 – 2008) Alfred Gusenbauer and Professor of Notre Dame University Fred Dallmayr (USA). President of Titan Capital Corporation Nicholas Papanicolaou (USA/Greece) is the Forum's Co-founder. The late Jagdish Kapur (1920 – 2010), President of the Kapur Surya Foundation (India), was the Co-chairman and Founder of the WPF.
The International Coordinating Committee (ICC) is the Forum’s consultative body. The head of the ICC is former Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer. Among the ICC’s members are the President of the International Progress Organization Hans Koechler (Austria), Director of Research Emeritus at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique of France Henri Favre, among many other prominent scholars and researchers of the current “dialogue of civilizations” agenda.
The Forum works with different public institutions and organizations all over the world. Among them are the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO); the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF); the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE); the Globalization for the Common Good Initiative; and other nongovernmental organizations which form the WPF “Dialogue of Civilizations” network.
Headquarters
The WPF “Dialogue of Civilizations” European Headquarters are located in Vienna (Austria). They coordinate cooperation with European NGOs and support the work of the WPF International Coordinating Committee. The Director of the European Headquarters is Diana Orlova. The Russian Headquarters are located in Moscow and support all aspects of the work of the World Public Forum. They are headed by the WPF’s Executive Director Vladimir Kulikov.
Major Programs
The experience and knowledge of the participants of the Forum help them create a common vision of the world and describe its contemporary state as an evolutionary process of formation of a global society. The programs of the Forum are to draw the attention of the world community to the fact that this trend should be in line with the reality of co-existence of different civilizations, based on common value criteria and international law. At the moment the World Public Forum carries out the following programs:
International project «Alternative models of globalization» / Post-globalization
The project deals with conducting cultural events, publishing articles and books on academic and socio-political issues, organizing conferences devoted to the problems of alternative ways of world development in the 21 century.
International «Dialogue of Civilizations» Award
This Award is conferred upon political, intellectual and spiritual leaders who further the ideas of justice and unity and who strongly contribute to the strengthening of peace and dialogue among the nations. Among the laureates of the Award there are such outstanding leaders as former Chancellor of Austria Alfred Gusenbauer and the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Network community
The network community is designed to invite new people to participate in the programs of the Forum and coordinate their efforts to publicize or disseminate the concept of dialogue world-wide via a permanent e-platform.
