Europe must bring back border guards to fight illegal immigration, says Sarkozy's party chief.
UMP chief Xavier Bertrand has called for the return of border guards to control illegal immigration. An article published at Mail Online.
The head of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's party says Europe should bring back border guards to fight illegal immigration. Xavier Bertrand, chief of the governing conservative party UMP, said: 'better regulation is indispensable, on the European level, where we must put back coast guards and border guards.'
Mr Sarkozy has targeted immigrants with a series of tough recent pronouncements, seens as a bid to appeal to extreme-right voters to revive his dismal approval ratings.
Mr Bertrand, quoted in the Nice-Matin newspaper yesterday, does not specify how or where European countries should strengthen border protections.
Border controls are limited within the 25 countries in the so-called Schengen free-travel zone created in 1985.
French authorities have in the past blamed Britain for problems with migrants setting up illegal camps because it is not signed up to the Schengen agreement.
Notorious camp the Jungle was demolished last year and 278 men, mainly young Afghanistanis, were arrested but later released on human rights grounds.
The Schengen agreement allows people from Europe to travel between designated EU states without passports and visas.
