Irina Bokova Nominated as UN Secretary-General Candidate

Bulgaria announced on Tuesday Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, would be its candidate for the top job at the United Nations (UN). Ms Bokova can be an important candidate with her experience, the statement of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs read.

The 63-year-old Bulgarian diplomat, who is the first woman to be the head of UNESCO, could also become the first woman to hold the post of UN Secretary-General and the first UN Secretary-General from Eastern Europe.

Irina Bokova has been Bulgarian Ambassador in Paris and Monaco and has been Director-General of UNESCO since 2009.
